The study also found that on average users would check their phones just six minutes after initiating a study session. This could propel a cycle of anxiety, with users feeling they are missing lead leading to lower academic performance leading to more worry. For example, there exists a correlation between students’ GPA and the types of activities they engage using their smartphones. As students use their mobile devices for recreational purposes such as social media apps, watching videos and games, research has found that there is a significant drop in college students grades as frequency usage goes on (Lepp, Barkley & Karpinski, SAGE Open). Despite educational institutions attempting to limit mobile device usage, students still bring them along and partake in these distractions during class. According to the Pew Research Center, schools that have banned the presence and usage of mobile phones have had 65% of the student body disregard the rules and 43% of them texting during the middle of classes (Harman & Sato, Questia). These findings also prove that the undertaking of multi-tasking is detrimental to the overall learning process, in spite of claims and protests from the students.
